The Senate will hold a vote this month on important legislation to protect babies who survive abortions. Senate Majority Leader John Thune is planning a procedural vote this month on the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. While federal law has protections in place to ensure that babies who survive abortions receive lifesaving medical treatment and are not merely left to die, the legislation doesn’t have strong criminal enforcement mechanisms to punish those who would let babies die who survive abortions.

The New Mexico Supreme Court has ruled against Lea and Roosevelt counties and the cities of Clovis and Hobbs, claiming their passage of pro-life ‘Sanctuary Cities for the Unborn‘ ordinances “exceeded their authority by enacting ordinances preempted by state law.”

However, despite the apparent loss, the decision has “thrilled” legal representatives of the Cities and Counties who passed the pro-life measures, as well as pro-life activists who supported the ordinances. Why? Because the ruling acknowledged the validity of the federal Comstock Act, which prohibits the mailing of abortion-inducing drugs and other devices.

Abortion group trains pharmacists to dispense abortion pills

Pro-life groups are criticizing a burgeoning effort to expand use of the abortion pill through pharmacist prescriptions, slamming what one advocate called an effort at “chipping away at medical standards for women.” A pilot program launched this month in Washington state has trained pharmacists to prescribe the abortion-drug combo mifepristone and misoprostol to women seeking abortions.
