Last week, Virginia Gov. Pointing to “breathtaking failures,” President Trump is moving to shut down the federal Department of Education. Congress will need to make any cuts permanent, but downsizing the federal education bureaucracy is a long-overdue reform.

Nearly a decade ago, I wrote in Public Discourse that “Europe has a free speech problem. It should serve as a warning to the United States.” Now, with Europe’s deterioration into a full-blown crisis of censorship, much of the “cautionary tale” I outlined in 2016 has come to pass. But in an exceedingly welcome turn, the U.S. has arrived on the scene with renewed gusto for the role of global free speech champion, bucking the trend toward more censorship.

DEI is firmly embedded within American health care, so it’s unsurprising that DEI acolytes in that sector have been especially vocal in their criticism of President Trump’s efforts to dismantle DEI. The focus on “diversity” and “equity” in American health care comes at the expense of rigor and excellence, all to the detriment of patient care.
